I had my 4th speed workout of half-marathon training this morning – 6×400 @ 1:56 pace. Now three weeks ago, I had my first speed day which was 4×400. I was struggling to break 2:00 minutes for each 400. Today, my splits looked like this:

400 Meters: 1:44, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55, 1:49, 1:42.

That’s what CONSISTENCY will do!! I’m so proud of my workout and myself. If anyone were to ask me the key to success in fitness or diet, my answer would simply be consistency. If you do the “right” things day in and day out, one missed workout will not kill you, nor will an extra 2 brownies or serving of pasta. It’s about stability over the long-term. That’s how you stay fit and healthy for life!

Hopefully I’m taking hot yoga tomorrow at a new studio, so I’ll be back with the results πŸ™‚



Staying Strong (Island)

Hello from Commack, Long Island!

Mike is playing a tournament out here this weekend so I offered to come and keep my Mom company. We ended up leaving on Saturday morning so I got to enjoy my Friday night at home with Sean! I had dinner at his house and ate delicious turkey sausage, pepper, and onion with homemade sauce! The best part of dinner by far was the whole wheat bread from Stop and Shop ❀ I’m thinking I should get some to make sandwiches on…

After dinner we went out with Chris and Sheevey to see Scott Pilgram vs The World. It was a weird plot but actually pretty funny!

Saturday we left home at 6 am and drove out to Long Island. I was planning on running my 10 miles on the training plan once we got there so I wore my running clothes. We made GREAT time and I was on the road at Sunken Meadow Park for my run by 7:45! It was a beautiful running morning with so many TNT people out πŸ™‚ They were all so friendly<3

The Run:

Distance: 10.0 mi

Time: 1:30:00

Pace: 9 min/mile

I was using my Nike+ to calculate theΒ mileage. I’m not too confident in the accuracy so I ran until the clock said 1:30:00 (which the watch said 10.24 mi) just in case. It felt like I was going pretty fast but I just couldn’t believe I was running less than 9 minute miles… It really doesn’t matter because it was a strong 90 min run and I will really never know! (although it would be nice πŸ˜‰

Luckily my Mom brought me some breakfast from the hotel so I would eat on the way to Dick’s. After wandering around there and then at Walgreens, we came back to the hotel to try and check-in. 2 hours later, I finally got to shower!! My goodness, I smelled.

I had a panini for lunch:

Honey Roast Turkey (I removed about half), cheddar, honey mustard, on whole wheat foccacia.

The rest of the day was spent at the ball field and eating. Seriously, I was hungry all day! Here’s a list of what I ate…

Pre-run: 1 piece whole wheat bread, banana, ~1.5 T pb, strawberry jelly

Mid-run: 4 oz Vitamin Water + 6 oz water, ~1/4 c raisins


  • 2 pieces whole wheat toast
  • 1 banana
  • 1 T PB
  • Panini (pictured above)
  • Gatorade (3 C low calorie)
  • ~50 cal hot cocoa
  • Apple
  • Larabar
  • ~1/2 c oatmeal squares, cashew, raisin/craisin trail mix
  • Salad (a little bit of lettuce, chickpeas, crutons, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta, cottage cheese, grapes)
  • White bean Chicken Chili

… and then I woke up starving! I guess that’s what 10 miles will do to you. Gotta feed the machine πŸ™‚

Looks like we’re going to stuck here until Monday… boo! On the other hand, it’s not like I have anything else to do!


My Lentil Soup

My Lentil Soup

  • 1 c lentils (uncooked)
  • 1.5 c veggie broth
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt + Pepper
  • Bunch chopped broccoli
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Red Wine Vinegar

Bring veggie broth and onions to a boil. Add lentils and boil 2-3 min. Reduce heat to a summer. Add celery, tomatoes, garlic, and s+p. Simmer until lentils are almost tender. Add broccoli, mustard, vinegar, and cook 5 minutes more.

Serve with BBQ sauce and side of crackers!

Home, home-home-home

… to the tune of that one song…

Anyway! Seany and I had one of the best drives back from Boston yet! We made it from his apartment to Middletown in 5 hours flat! That includes a touch of traffic in Hartford, a mini-stop for gas because the station was closed (lame!), and a longer stop some where off the Saw Mill Parkway. We had very* little gas left and I knew if we didn’t get off to look, we’d soon be heading over the Tappen Zee Bridge and then it would be too late! Needless to say, we made it and I got a pack of Pretzel M&M’s that restored my energy πŸ™‚

I spent my first real day of vacation (Thursday) running 5 miles, shopping, sunning, cooking, and baking… pretty much my ideal day! Starting from the top…

Awesome tempo run, that felt hard but bearable!

[Insert delicious oatmeal! — 1/2 c oats, >1 cups water, 1 banana –> cook until starting to cream up, then add 1 tbsp chia seeds + cinnamon. Serve with 1 T mighty maple <3] It makes a HUGE volume!

Shopping! I attempted to exchange my new Banana Republic jeans for a larger size but apparently if you order it online, you can’t exchange it in the store :-/. Boo. Then Mom and I went into Victoria Secret to get my free pair of undies and try on the new Incredible bra. And it was, incredible. I got properly sized and bought a black one! I had $10 off and I WILL be going back to get the Nude color next time I get a coupon!

Cooking! My Mom made grilled chicken and asked me to make a side to go with it. We had some arborio rice in the pantry from Valentine’s day when I made this recipe. I decided on Risotto with Sun-Dried Tomatoes. I followed the recipe exactly (except I used dried basil instead of fresh and added some minced garlic to the onions) and it turned out great! I think everyone in the fam liked it πŸ™‚ I really enjoy making risotto. I find it soothing to stand and stir…

Baking! Kiera begged me to make dessert so after a little searching, we decided on these Chewy, Chunky Blondies from Brown Eyed Baker. They were divine. I had to run to the store to get the butterscotch chips and brown sugar but of course I never checked on the flour… We ran out of white so I had to use half whole wheat. I don’t think it really changed the texture or taste at all though. We also only had salted butter but once again, not a big deal. I will definitely be making these again!! Kiera desperately wanted to make the Cookie Dough Cheesecake Bars, but we’ll have to save those for next time πŸ˜‰

The night ended with a bar in bed with blogs… not too shabby for the first day of summer vacation* (Let’s not talk about how that was Aug. 19th… hehe)


Free as a bird… almost!

I just have to hand in my papers tomorrow and show up to 1 class and then I’m done! πŸ™‚

One of the things I love about my job the most is when I truly get to see people feel better about themselves and develop healthy lifestyles for life. It’s not about immediate weight loss or bigger muscles. Today my 20 year-old female client (SL) told me that she’s really grown to love her time working out. She took a break from studying yesterday to come to the gym because she knew it would be a great release and make her feel better πŸ™‚ SL said that she loves the routine of coming to the gym and the quest to improve. She’s already doing 10 straight push-ups (on her knees) after only being able to complete 5 four weeks ago! She feels stronger and healthier and feels better about herself! I don’t know if she’s lost weight because really that doesn’t matter. It’s about being healthy for life and I’m so blessed to be able to promote, encourage, and teach those skills!

If that’s not great enough, I got my hair cut today! Β πŸ˜‰

After the appointment, I was starving so I headed to b-good and got the Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad.

It was fantastic except I forgot to ask for the dressing on the side, oh well. I sat inside and ate by myself while playing on the i-touch. After I was finished I grapped a diet peach Snapple for the road and wandered around Newbury and the Pru. I was able to escape Lululemon without doing any damage. Amazing, I know.

Now I’m just waiting for Sean to get out of work so we can go get Berry Freeze!! I can’t even tell you how excited I am!!!

My bestie is coming tomorrow for a quick visit before I head HOME! Great things in the near future πŸ™‚

I think yesterday may have been one of the most active/tiring days I’ve had in a while!
My day started at 6:00am so I could eat and get ready for my run. After a banana, slice of bread, and pb, I was out the door by 7. I had 8 miles on the schedule at an 9:30 pace and did just that! πŸ™‚

My legs felt tired from the get-go but mentally Β I was in the right place so I just pushed through Β it. It felt great to be out early in the beautiful sunny high 60 degree weather!

After my run I rushed to stretch, shower, and eat so I could make it to the Gap. Why? The BLACK MAGIC EVENT! Gap was giving away a free pair of their new black pants to the first 50 people at the store. It opened at 10 so I thought by getting there before 9:15 would give me a decent shot. Um, no. I was probably one of the first 100 people there but needless to say, no free pants for me! I still got a really great deal- 2 pairs of jeans for $50. I got 40% off my purchase, plus jeans for Buy One, Get One for $20. Not bad at all.

I did pay for it though. Stood in the fitting room line for 20+minutes and then in the checkout line for even longer. My legs were screaming but my head was seeing $ signs and cute fall outfits… πŸ™‚

Afterwards, I came home and after some dilly-dallying Sean and I hit up Espresso Royale for some lunch. I got the Sahara on buckwheat bread which was: hummus, cucumber, roasted red peppers, havarti cheese, and I subbed in turkey and nixed the sprouts. It was awesome. I’ll definitely be getting that again! Next time, however, I would probably get it without the cheese. We took our sandwiches to the reflection pool by the Christian Science center to eat. It was peaceful and perfect πŸ™‚

After some time on the couch at Sean’s apartment watching Entourage, it was time to pack… Sean is putting his crap stuff in storage for a few weeks so we don’t have to bring it home. (He’s moving from the off-campus apt to West Village). It actually wasn’t too bad because he had everything organized so we just loaded the car and took off. Zack’s friend Sid actually was driving the MASSIVE TV in another car. Long story short, the storage unit was on the second floor which involved using a rickety old stair case on wheels to carry the boxes up. Sucks. So the TV wasn’t going to make it so it got put in the back of my car. I think Sean found a buyer though so he can finally get rid of it.

After all this madness we were TIRED and HUNGRY. We made one of the best decisions in a while and opted to make our own taco dinner! We stopped at Wollaston’s and grabbed the necessary ingredients ($30) and headed back to my place to cook. I had a yummy taco salad with lettuce, avocado, tomato, ground beef, grated goat cheese, salsa, and crushed multi-grain tortilla chips. It was exactly what I was craving and it was AMAZING. (Sean had his tacos in soft shells)

We ended the night on his porch drinking red wine in the cool breeze with candles, and Christmas lights casting a light glow. Contentment.
